I will avoid the Hong Kong MTR high-speed train service, as it is a fail. Seats are too hard for any long-distance travel in China, it’s too noisy in the carriage – due to insufficient acoustic material – and the armrests are hard plastic. The armrest next to window space is badly designed. The seat design was worse than Cathay Pacific. China’s high-speed trains, by contrast, are excellent.

There is nowhere to hang a jacket or bag, the overhead shelves are flat – not curved to hold luggage in the event of a sudden stop – and the overall carriage interior looks cheap.

The departure screens inside the departure hall are all too small, the barrier gates to platforms are confusing and the seating area in the departure hall is inadequate. Thirty minutes of Wi-fi is a joke and Wi-fi on train for two time slots per hour is pathetic.
