Letters | How Robert Mueller is draining the swamp, one Trump lie at a time

  • Praise to the officials with the courage to brave the onslaught of vilification and belittlement that Donald Trump continues to launch

I am a curmudgeonly septuagenarian and one of the biggest cynics in the vast infinities of space and time. Nonstop cynicism may be exhausting, but I find comfort in the truth it reveals.

Ever since Donald J. Trump became a presidential candidate, I have been working overtime to deconstruct his delusions of grandeur, his lies and deceptions. Thankfully, special counsel Robert Mueller is wielding the cynic’s pick and shovel now, as my blisters heal (“Mueller: Russian national offered Trump campaign ‘political synergy’ in 2015, Cohen says”, December 8).
As he excavates the self-dealing and even criminality that decorate the Trump enterprise, with confessions of wrongdoing in presidential bluster (“Trump: hush money was ‘simple private transaction’ and not illegal”, December 10), and as the mists of mendacity are blown away, exposing disbelief in what US voters wrought, we praise those officials with the courage to brave the onslaught of vilification and belittlement that Trump continues to launch. They are the drainers of the present-day swamp.
