Hong Kong Gold Coast motor show highlights Asia’s best, from priceless classics to supercars
Hong Kong motoring enthusiasts can look forward to a weekend where a Bugatti Chiron makes its debut – along with an Indian prince
Sino Group is revving up for its second Gold Coast Motor Festival on November 10 to 12, promising to host “Hong Kong’s premier motor celebration” and “one of the most important motoring events on Asia’s motoring calendar”.
Last year’s inaugural show was well-received, Sino says, drawing more than 15,000 visitors to an impressive range of cars at the Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel and marina resort, outside Tuen Mun. This year, the developer is shipping in some rarer collectibles, top car people – and even an Indian prince – to “a mega event we can all look forward to”, according to Eugene Leung, the festival’s general manager.

With the help of marques and collectors, the 2017 festival will present more than 80 cars, from priceless classics to supercars. Look out for a Ferrari 250 GT/E that was first introduced at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1960, and a Toyota 2000GT, Japan’s first supercar.
Visitors will also see a special 1926 Bentley 3 litre, one of the oldest registered cars in Hong Kong, and an 1886 Benz tricycle.
The supercars include a one-off Pagani Zonda Fantasma Evo and a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, one of only 20 ever produced; along with a McLaren P1GTR and a McLaren F1.
The show’s highlight could be a Bugatti Chiron, which will make its public debut in Hong Kong, or the rare hybrid Volkswagen XL1 two-seater of 2013.
The displays are “carefully picked, placed and presented to wow every visitor”, says local collector Carl Yuen, the festival’s honorary curator.
The event’s concours d’elegance also seems to have moved up a gear. Keenly watched by local car collectors, this automotive beauty contest is expected to be judged by international car experts such as Prince Rana Manvendra of India, Philip Rathgen from Switzerland and Adolfo Orsi Jnr of Italy.
Their fellow judges will include some of the city’s more prominent collectors, such as Joseph Fung, Alain Li, Lawrence Yu, Frank Yu, James Ogilvy-Stuart and Douglas Young.
The event will also celebrate local fashion and lifestyle, Yuen says, with Ascot Chang designing and tailoring the judges’ suits, “and our very own William Tang interpreting our festival with his unique, specially created hats”.

Additionally, the festival will offer hi-tech entertainment, as it collaborates with VLT, racing driver Darryl O’Young and Microsoft Xbox on their eagerly awaited driving game. Visitors can race against O’Young and win a limited-edition Xbox One S console.
The show will also feature family fun, with special car-themed inflatable games, a mini-train ride and live entertainment.
