6 beautiful villas in Thailand and Indonesia to stay at this Christmas
Don’t want to stay in Hong Kong during the festive season? Here are some amazing villas in Thailand and Indonesia you can spend your holidays at.
L2 Residence, Samui, Thailand
Who it’s for: Fans of modern, directional architecture
Our favourite part: The floating yoga deck
A stay at L2 Residence is a Samui experience like no other – first you have to get to it, via a hair-raising drive up an incredibly steep hill. But once you get there, you won’t want to leave. The villa is built into a breathtaking tropical hillside with commanding views over the sparkling Gulf of Siam, and the architecture is breathtaking. It’s uniquely L-shaped and spread over two storeys (hence the name) and every corner you turn reveals a new space. Each room is minimalist in design, housing full-length windows and private balconies to emphasise the view. Start your days at the outdoor yoga deck, and head back there at sunset to feel fully immersed in the Samui atmosphere.
Baan Silavaree, Samui, Thailand
Who it’s for: Families and friends who want a secluded stay
Our favourite part: The waterfall and picnic area
The feeling at Baan Silavaree is special – just like you’ve booked out your own private resort. The five-bedroom villa is spread across a forested hillside on Koh Samui’s peaceful southwestern shore. It’s decked out in contemporary Asian style, with plenty of warm wood, sleek limestone and an exotic mix of Anglo-Burmese, Tibetan and Balinese furniture. We love the outdoor saltwater pool, and the little picnic area carved out by the waterfall – perfect for afternoon tea or a spot of meditation.
Villa Blue View, Samui, Thailand
Who it’s for: For groups who want privacy and great views all day
Our favourite part: The infinity pool overlooking the ocean
Designed by the multi-award-winning GFAB Architects and 180 metres above sea level, Villa Blue View is perfectly named. Nothing can prepare you for the view as you walk in: a 180-degree wash of sky and sea. It’s the most striking out at the infinity pool, whether you’re swimming or sunbathing on the daybeds, but every room has its own view of the ocean so you can drink it in without even getting out of bed in the morning. You don’t need to leave the villa, but if you do, you’re just 800 metres from a quiet stretch of beach.
Villa Sin Sin, Bali, Indonesia
Who it’s for: Couples who want a secluded Bali stay
Our favourite part: The incredible private art displays
For a Bali experience a world away from the rush of backpackers and tourists, it doesn’t get better than Villa Sin Sin. This villa is a dreamy enclave of private villas in a discreet local neighbourhood, surrounded by lush rice paddy fields in Kerobokan, Bali. Its three extraordinary two-bedroom villas were designed by Sin Sin Man, in collaboration with the celebrated Italian GM architect and author of Bali Modern: The Art of Tropical Living, Gianni Francione. Whatever you do, make sure you dine in the villa – the in-house chef is amazing.
Villa Vedas, Bali, Indonesia
Who it’s for: Large families or groups of friends
Our favourite part: The central pool and open living spaces
Between the jaw-dropping design (the work of Australian Stuart Bevan), the absolute beach front, the super private location and the sheer decadence of its marble, stone and teak fittings, this place has the X factor you’re looking for when you are planning a milestone birthday, a family reunion or a destination wedding. Every element of the villa – from the floating staircases to the artworks – has been meticulously designed. Plus, you’re right on the beachfront, with panoramic views in all directions.
Villa Tantangan, Bali, Indonesia
Who it’s for: Couples travelling together
Our favourite part: The beautiful landscaped garden that leads down to the beach
Designed by acclaimed Italian architect Valentina Audrito of Word of Mouth, the environmentally friendly Villa Tantangan is a haven of natural light and wood accents perfect for design aficionados wanting front row seats to the best sunsets, black sand beaches and chic holidaying. This three-bedroom villa also sets itself apart from the electrical network of the island and is powered by solar panels, designed to minimise energy consumption. If you’re travelling in a big group but still fancy a bit of private time, this is the perfect villa for that – there are separate bedroom pavilions, surrounded by lush gardens.
