About 200 golfers got into full swing for charity in a recent event at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Sheung Shui to raise money for the needy.
The Honma Hong Kong Open Charity Cup, staged on November 28, was co-organised by the club, NGO Friends of Asia Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Golf Association, as well as the European Tour and Asian Tour.
A cheque of HK$1.3 million was presented to beneficiaries during the event. One such party was Operation Santa Claus, an annual campaign jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and public broadcaster RTHK, which supports local charities.

Ian Gardner, the club’s general manager, said he was thankful for the backing from partners.
“It’s our pleasure to hold this event,” he said, adding that he believed players enjoyed themselves as they pitted their skills against each other for a good cause.
“It’s good to see that this raises money for charities in Hong Kong,” Gardner said.
The Hub Hong Kong, a children’s support centre providing educational and extracurricular classes, was also a beneficiary of the event. Bruce Stinson, co-founder and vice-chairman of the charity, said: “We are very fortunate to be [part of this event] along with Operation Santa Claus.”
Helen Chan Li, chief executive of Friends of Asia Hong Kong, said she was pleased to see that the charity cup had gained enormous support from donors. “We will continue to organise similar charitable activities,” she said.

The organisation, founded in 2014, has been a charity partner for various major sports tournaments in the city and has raised funds to support NGO programmes for children. It aims to increase awareness among children and teenagers of the health benefits of sports and recreation.
Hazel Leung Ching-hei, 12, who took part in the charity cup with a sponsorship and won a prize for playing long-distance shots, said she had dreams of becoming a professional.
“I want to make it to the LPGA [Ladies Professional Golf Association],” she said, adding that she hoped to follow in the footsteps of local star golfer Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching.
