Foreign companies can benefit from Indonesia’s robust domestic market as much as local firms do. Such is the case when the archipelago’s largest manufacturer of transmission cables, Voksel Electric, a publicly-listed company in Indonesia, partnered with Hengtong Optic-Electric International, one of China’s biggest cable producers, early this year.

“We both want more market share in Indonesia,” says David Lius, Voksel Electric’s commercial director. “With its bigger business scale, Hengtong Optic-Electric International can help Voksel Electric leap farther and faster into the future.”

Hengtong Optic-Electric International, on the other hand, will have direct access to Voksel Electric’s growing market in Indonesia. Voksel Electric will supply its products to Indonesian power distributor PLN for a government project that would generate 35,000MW of additional electricity by 2019. The company also enjoys a strong customer following across its range of cable products, from high-voltage transmission lines to fibre optic cables.

Customers have come to depend on Voksel Electric’s reliable technology, which originates from the company’s Japanese partner SWCC Showa Cable Systems. Voksel Electric’s largest attraction, however, is its ability to give clients end-to-end service.

“We have many offerings to fulfil customers’ needs,” Lius says. “We have our own project contractors, consultants, related equipment, production machineries and a dedicated subsidiary that installs the cables.”

Looking forward, Voksel Electric welcomes partnerships with companies overseas to expand its exports from the present 20 per cent of overall business volume. The company would like to collaborate with contractors, suppliers and power distribution players abroad to complement its domestic electric distribution operations.

“Foreign companies should be open to doing business in Indonesia as there are many good international companies here,” Lius says. “Voksel Electric is one of those companies, considering our experience and exciting growth potential.”
