China has become a major player in the global railway sector, with a transport network surpassing Europe's in size. To better serve its Chinese customers in terms of responsiveness, products and costs, Faiveley Transport, the French global supplier of engineering solutions for the railway industry, opened a China division in 2014 to supplement its product-based and services divisions. The division has approximately 1,000 employees in six operating companies across the mainland.

A family-owned and publicly listed company, Faiveley Transport has specialised for nearly a century in the design, manufacturing and marketing of a wide range of systems for all train-related market segments globally, from platform screen doors, access doors and braking systems to pantographs, event recorders and heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

The group also provides maintenance, retrofits and spares that enable customers to optimise the availability and life-cycle cost of its products.

Faiveley Transport has supplied some of the mainland's largest metro rail systems, including the Harbin, Guangzhou, Changchun, Wuhan, Shanghai and Beijing metros, and Hong Kong's MTR. It also has a strong presence in the locomotives segment in six-axle and eight-axle generations, and is positioning itself in the growing high-speed rail market with braking systems for new high-speed platforms undergoing homologation.

Serving the domestic market, Faiveley Transport is well-positioned to accompany China Railway Rolling Stock Corp (CRRC), the world's largest train builder, as it expands beyond the mainland. Faiveley Group announced that it will equip CRRC's new Boston metro cars with its air conditioning units, thus supporting the Chinese rolling stock manufacturer in its first project in the United States.

"We differentiate ourselves via our innovation, quality and flexibility - listening to our customers and configuring our standards to meet their specifications," says CEO Stéphane Rambaud-Measson. "Localisation and footprint expansion are very much part of our strategy to meet growing demand, specifically in China."

Faiveley Transport is in the process of merging with US railway equipment supplier Wabtec to form one of the world's largest rail equipment companies.

"In a changing world, we believe size and financial strength are essential," Rambaud-Measson says. "In the context of rail industry consolidation, this merger will enable us to pursue our aim of becoming one of the leading global players in rail equipment and services. The complementary nature of our activities in terms of product portfolios and geographies will allow us to better serve our customers and operate on a larger, global scale."

"Trains are built to last 40 years or longer," Rambaud-Measson says. "We are a global, long-term partner. We are where our customers are, and support them from train-building and throughout the entire operational life of their rolling stock. There is no region in the world where we cannot operate."
