While searching for a northwest passage to China in the early 17th century, English and Dutch merchants discovered a new inland waterway cutting from the northeastern tip of the United States down towards the Atlantic.

The route allowed ships to sail downriver into a huge bay before exiting towards the ocean. The river is now known as the Hudson, and the bay into which it spills is actually one of the world's largest natural harbours.

On the Hudson River's banks and in surrounding areas, communities prospered to become what is now the metropolitan area comprising parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. And at the heart of the tri-state area is New York City, the global financial centre and home to Wall Street, Silicon Alley, the Empire State Building and Broadway.

"The New York metropolitan area's key roles in many fields, from world commerce and technology to art and education, highlight a dynamism that we'd like to share in our latest country report," says Angela Gaspar, managing partner at Discovery Reports.

"Our interviews with company executives ensure readers the freshest and most accurate information regarding companies' business development plans and directions."
