Goals by Gareth Bale, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah nominated for Fifa Puskas Award

Quaresma, Pavard and Cheryshev among other contenders for best goal of the year are named as voting opens to the public

The goals in line for the Puskas Award for the best of the year have been revealed by Fifa.

Cristiano Ronaldo is in the top 10 thanks to his overhead kick against Juventus for former club Real Madrid.

That goal was recently selected as the Uefa goal of the season.

He’s joined by English Premier League top scorer and player of the year Mohamed Salah, who is nominated for his derby day goal against Everton, and former Real Madrid teammate Gareth Bale, whose own Uefa Champions League overhead kick makes the list.

The Welshman was happy to be on the list, posting about it on his Twitter account.

Salah’s club used their official account to post multiple angles of the goal against city rivals Everton.

It’s not all strikes from superstars.

Young Australian footballer Riley McGree has made the cut for his backheel goal scored against Melbourne City for Newcastle Jets in the A-League playoffs.

Olivier Giroud won the 2017 Puskas Award with a similar goal.

The Fifa World Cup in Russia provides several of the goals on the shortlist.

Benjamin Pavard’s goal against Argentina, which was named goal of the World Cup, is on the list, as is Russia’s Dennis Cheryshev scoring against Croatia.

Lionel Messi also makes the cut for his strike for Argentina against Nigeria, while Portugal winger Ricardo Quaresma rounds out the Russia 2018 nominees with his goal against Iran.

To qualify, goals have to be scored between July 3 2017 and July 15 2018.

Polling is open until the awards ceremony on September 24 in London.
