Breaking | Mark Hughes sacked as Southampton manager after just eight months in charge

Premier League strugglers Southampton have sacked Welshman Mark Hughes as manager of the club after just eight months in charge at St Mary’s.

Hughes last game as Saints boss saw them blow a two-goal lead against embattled Manchester United last weekend.

The South-coast club are currently 18th in the league table and have already begun the search for anew manager.

Assistant coach Kelvin Davis will take charge of their next match against Tottenham on Wednesday.

Hughes’ assistant Mark Bowen and first team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left the club.

The former Wales manager oversaw just one win from Southampton’s past 15 league games.

Former Swansea boss Paulo Sousa is thought to be in the early running to replace Hughes.

The 55-year-old took over at St Mary’s in March last year and managed to steer the club to Premier League survival as well as the FA Cup semi-finals, but the board at Southampton had been increasingly alarmed at Hughes’ in ability to guide the team clear of the relegation zone this term.
