Tiffany Chan hits nine-over in rain delayed second round to miss cut at first US Women’s Open

Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn storms into a four-shot lead over Australia’s Sarah Jane Smith after playing 28 holes on Saturday

Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching hit a nine over par round of 81 in her storm interrupted second round at the US Women’s Open to finish the day 11-over par and miss the cut at Shoal Creek, Alabama.

Saturday’s second round resumed an hour later than officials had planned and Chan restarted on the fifth hole at five-over par but that was quickly seven over as she double bogeyed the par five.

Another double bogey on the 12th, plus bogeys on the tenth and 13th meant Chan missed the cut, which was at five-over.

The result is expected to see Chan drop five places on the season-long CME Race to Globe list to 131.

Chan’s debut season on the LPGA Tour has seen her earn US$20,086 as she looks for a first top 10 finish. She has played the full four rounds on five of her 10 tournaments on tour and her best finish so far has been tied for 52nd.

Chan hit the fairway nine out of 14 times in her second round, an improvement on her first round where she managed seven but she also found herself in the sand three times – failing to recover on each occasion – and made less greens in regulation, 10, than the first round’s 12.

Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn leads the way after three rounds at 12-under, four shots ahead of Australia’s Sarah Jane Smith. Smith had been in the lead after two rounds but Jutanugarn had stormed past her after surging up the leader board to second on Saturday morning when the field finished their second rounds. Jutanugarn played 28 holes on Saturday.

The tournament is back on track and expected to conclude on Sunday evening local time with Jutanugarn now the favourite.

The next event on the tour calendar is the Shoprite LPGA Classic at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in New Jersey starting on June 8.
