It is the question everyone wants to ask Masters winner Sergio Garcia, not if he’s going to be watching “The Match” between Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods (he’s not), but whose hairstyle he prefers: Tommy Fleetwood’s slick mullet or Wade Ormsby’s thick moustache.
Fleetwood made his case for his distinct flowing hairstyle and spectacular beard after his second round where he played alongside Garcia and Ormsby.
“Canadian hockey flow, but with teeth,” he said when asked to describe its look. Fleetwood, who shot an impressive 65 on the second day, said all that hair does require some maintenance. It was a decidedly hot and sunny day at Fanling on Friday.
“Sometimes after being in the humidity I have to try and keep the weight off. And it’s a little bit bulky at the moment so it will need some addressing when I get home, but it is all natural flowing locks.”
Last year’s Hong Kong Open winner Ormsby said his moustache came back around for a very particular reason: he won the 2017 edition at Fanling with the brown tickler, so naturally he had to grow the caterpillar back again for this year’s tournament.
It is also Movember, where men grow moustaches to raise awareness for various men’s health issues.
The European Tour’s Twitter feed recently declared his cookie duster “the best moustache in the game”. See below for official verification:
“I’ve had it for about three weeks,” he said, noting there isn’t much he does to shape it, no colouring or combing either. “I had it last year when I won so I thought I’d bring it back this year, maybe it’s a good omen.”
Ormsby, who shot a 67 in his second round, said it will probably disappear quite quickly after the Open is over, regardless of whether he wins or not.
“There’s not much upkeep. You just kind of let it go, it’s kind of pretty dirty looking.”
Of course only one man could decide which is better, their playing mate for the day, the Spaniard himself, Garcia, who did not hesitate in giving his verdict.
“Well I can grow the moustache, so probably Tommy’s hair.”
