Clearwater Bay Open: Deyen Lawson and Oskar Arvidsson share lead as Hong Kong’s Motin Yeung moves up
Australian and Swede is one stroke ahead of New Zealand’s Nick Voke after two rounds while Yeung is in 22nd overall
Australia’s Deyen Lawson shot a bogey-free six-under 64 to share the lead with Sweden’s Oskar Arvidsson (65) at nine under heading into the weekend at the HK$2.27 million Clearwater Bay Open in Hong Kong, the 14th and final event of this year’s PGA Tour Series-China.
Hong Kong No 1 Motin Yeung, seeking to break into the top five of the Order of Merit to earn a Web.com Tour card, carded a 68 to tie for 22nd at one-under and will be joined at the weekend by local players Jason Hak Shun-yat (69) and amateurs Matthew Cheung (69) and Terrence Ng (73), with a total of 69 players making the cut.
First-round leader Nick Voke, fifth on the Order of Merit, is one back after a 67 at The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club.
Korean Jiung Jeong (66) and American Matthew Negri (67) share fourth at six -under, one ahead of two-time winner Gunn Charoenkul (68) of Thailand, American Ben Lein (68) – who both eagled the par-five 18th – and Italy’s Cristiano Terragni.
Yeung hit back after an opening round of 71 to stay within reach of the leaders.
“I think I will keep the same strategy,” Yeung said.
“Just go for birdies and try to be consistent off the tees because I think that is very important out here but will try to make as many birdies as possible. I’m still pretty far behind the leaders.
“I hope the [Hong Kong fans] come and support golf in Hong Kong and come support me and support this tournament.”
Lawson, who tied for second at the New Zealand PGA Championship in February, teed off on 10 and birdied four of his first six holes as well as four and seven.
“I felt pretty comfortable. Everything is reasonably solid. Doesn’t feel amazing, but I’m hitting it in the right spots and not leaving myself in any silly positions or short-sighting. I’ve matured as a golfer a little bit in the last year or two,” said the 27-year-old Lawson.
Arvidsson, 51st in the Order of Merit, started the day one behind Voke and bogeyed the fifth before holing birdie putts at the four successive par-four holes from seven to 10.
