Recap by phillip woo

Red Desert just got up in the nick of time to win a thriller after executing nicely in the box-seat from a middle draw. He relished a step back in distance for a third career win over this surface and trip. Sunny Boy responded well to make it very close on the wire following a prominent run. It was one of his better efforts in this grade but he does like this surface and the light weight helped. Post-time favourite Kurpany found a couple just too good after hitting the front 300m out going forward deep from the widest gate to track the leader 650m out. He has been racing very well on the turf this season and this performance opens up options on the dirt. Victoriam ran on nicely to fill the frame despite getting shuffled back to near last after striking interference 700m out. It was clearly his best run this season following a switch to the dirt. Will Power ran on late without menacing after setting last from a wide gate. He got too far back from an outside gate and requires a stronger pace. Czarson just held his ground following a wide with cover run in midfield. He's likely on or near his mark and requires a draw.

Racing Incident Report

Race Nine: (602) - ALNWICK HANDICAP - Class 2 - 1200Meters

IGNITING was withdrawn on 16.4.21 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore).

Before being allowed to race again, IGNITING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

HIGHLAND FORTUNE and AMAZING CHOCOLATE were crowded for room between GOLDEN DASH and RED DESERT, both of which shifted ground.

After this, despite being vigorously ridden along, AMAZING CHOCOLATE failed to show any early speed.

WILL POWER was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.

Passing the 1100 Metres, HIGHLAND FORTUNE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of GOLDEN DASH.

Approaching the turn near the 700 Metres, LOCKHEED got its head on the side and lay in away from SUNNY BOY.

LOCKHEED then made heavy contact with the running rail near the 700 Metres and became badly unbalanced, resulting in LOCKHEED losing ground.

VICTORIAM, which was following LOCKHEED, was checked and shifted out away from that horse, resulting in HIGHLAND FORTUNE being taken out and bumping AMAZING CHOCOLATE which was hampered and taken out onto WILL POWER which was bumped by AMAZING CHOCOLATE which was also hampered and taken wider.

A veterinary inspection of LOCKHEED immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained a superficial laceration to the right flank.

Passing the 100 Metres, VICTORIAM shifted out abruptly under pressure, requiring its rider to stop riding and correct his mount.

Then close to the finishing line, VICTORIAM was awkwardly placed behind KURPANY.

After the race, Z Purton stated that he attributed GOLDEN DASH's failure to finish off the race to the horse resenting the kickback after being required to travel behind runners in the early stages as a result of GOLDEN DASH not showing sufficient early speed to take up a forward position despite being ridden along.

A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN DASH immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of AMAZING CHOCOLATE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

KURPANY, RED DESERT and SUNNY BOY were sent for sampling.
