Recap by phillip woo

Turquoise Alpha motored home late to just blouse President's Choice after getting out of a traffic jam 180m out ridden patiently third last for a first win at his 21st start. He did hit the line well last start over the 1,800m and was stepping out off a rating low. President's Choice was just collared after looking the winner leading 100m out following a prominent run deep without cover. He lived up to a near win two starts back. Firming favourite Nicholson Returns ran on well for third despite a slow start and getting unbalanced 600m out travelling behind midfield. It was a good run in defeat. Cheery stayed on all right for fourth after going forward three deep to stalking the leader Rattan Kingdom from a wide draw. It was a good effort carrying more weight following a win. Rattan Kingdom gradually faded after finding the lead from gate 12. He is building towards a win. Casa Legend ran on steadily without menacing after a wide with cover trip behind midfield. He's not far off a bottom. Free Foal came up flat after a one-off trip in midfield. the big weight has taken its toll in back-to-back runs.

Racing Incident Report

Race Six: (726) - CHAMPION APPRENTICES HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1600Meters

As the start was effected, NICHOLSON RETURNS lost ground after lifting its front feet off the ground and bumping the inside of its gate.

This resulted in NICHOLSON RETURNS racing back in the field today.

TURQUOISE ALPHA shifted out at the start and was steadied away from the heels of PASSING FASHION.

YEE CHEONG BRAVE was crowded for room on jumping between BOOM STITCH which shifted in and HAPPY JAI JAI which began very awkwardly and shifted out.

In this incident, BOOM STITCH became unbalanced after being bumped by YEE CHEONG BRAVE.

RATTAN KINGDOM was crowded for room at the start between CHEERY and CELESTIAL WARRIOR, both of which shifted ground.

Near the 1450 Metres, FREE FOAL was awkwardly placed inside the heels of BEAUTY SPIRIT which was then shifted out to relieve the crowding.

After the 1000 Metres, PRESIDENT'S CHOICE was left racing wide and without cover.

After passing the 700 Metres, PASSING FASHION became badly unbalanced and lost ground when reluctant to maintain its position inside FREE FOAL which shifted in marginally away from PRESIDENT'S CHOICE.

When PASSING FASHION was checked, NICHOLSON RETURNS, which was following that horse, was severely checked in consequence and shifted out abruptly away from the heels of PASSING FASHION, resulting in HAPPY JAI JAI also being checked when crowded for room inside BOOM STITCH which became unbalanced after being bumped on the hindquarters by HAPPY JAI JAI.

YEE CHEONG BRAVE, which was following HAPPY JAI JAI, was shifted out abruptly away from behind that horse.

TURQUOISE ALPHA was also hampered in consequence.

As the Stewards were of the opinion that this incident primarily resulted from PASSING FASHION being reluctant to maintain its position rather than a discernible shift in from either FREE FOAL or PRESIDENT'S CHOICE, no further action was taken.

TURQUOISE ALPHA had some difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 300 Metres and was shifted out abruptly away from the heels of NICHOLSON RETURNS near the 200 Metres when being directed to the outside of that horse.

When questioned, M F Poon stated that he was asked to ride HAPPY JAI JAI in a forward position and it was felt that the horse would be able to obtain a position behind the speed.

He said HAPPY JAI JAI was unsettled in the barriers and after beginning awkwardly became unbalanced after bumping YEE CHEONG BRAVE.

He said when horses better drawn than HAPPY JAI JAI were able to gain an advantage over his mount in the early stages, he shifted HAPPY JAI JAI behind those runners to obtain cover rather than ride his mount forward in an attempt to recover lost ground.

He said this resulted in HAPPY JAI JAI racing further back in the field than had been intended.

A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY SPIRIT and PASSING FASHION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

NICHOLSON RETURNS, TURQUOISE ALPHA and PRESIDENT'S CHOICE were sent for sampling.
