Recap by phillip woo

Favourite Oriental Smoke mowed down long-time leader Super Fortune from midfield for a third win, including both starts this term, from nine outings. He can hold his own up in grade off a light weight. Super Fortune found one too smart turning the final bend two lengths on top after zipping to the lead from gate nine. It was another honest performance. Villa Fionn dashed well through the centre to finish a close third from the rear of the field. It was one of better runs in Class Three. Punted late Phoenix Light made some ground late for fourth without threatening the to-three after a one-off trip behind midfield. It was a pleasing effort for his new trainer with a return to Class Three after a win in an easier grade in May. Pins Prince made some ground late near the inside after a patient ride two from the rear. He went all right off a 160-day break. Sakewin didn't fire after getting all favours in the box seat. He likely needed the run. Star Brite found little when popped the question after a one-out, one-back run. He does appear from his two starts this season to be on his mark.

Racing Incident Report

Race Eight: (62) - SHANGHAI HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1200Meters

PINS PRINCE began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped MR VALIANT.

VILLA FIONN began awkwardly and lost ground.

VILLA FIONN was then shifted across behind runners shortly after the start.

From the outside barrier, TELECOM SPEED was steadied to obtain cover in the early stages.

After the 1100 Metres, PINS PRINCE travelled keenly when being steadied to obtain cover.

Approaching the 1000 Metres, SUPER TEN was eased away from the heels of REVE PARISIEN which was taken in by SUPER FORTUNE (Apprentice Y L Chung) which shifted in when not properly clear.

Apprentice Chung was reprimanded and told to ensure that he provides proper clearance when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

After the 900 Metres, PHOENIX LIGHT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MR VALIANT which was being steadied to obtain cover.

PHOENIX LIGHT was then awkwardly placed behind MR VALIANT passing the 600 Metres.

Rounding the Home Turn, TELECOM SPEED raced tight outside PHOENIX LIGHT which shifted out.

Then at the entrance to the Straight, TELECOM SPEED was bumped by PHOENIX LIGHT which continued to shift to the outside of SUPER TEN to obtain clear running.

Passing the 400 Metres, ORIENTAL SMOKE was very awkwardly placed close to the heels of STAR BRITE when being shifted to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running.

When being shifted out, ORIENTAL SMOKE bumped REVE PARISIEN.

After the 400 Metres, MR VALIANT (L Ferraris) was steadied when disappointed for running between REVE PARISIEN which was racing tight outside ORIENTAL SMOKE and SUPER TEN which shifted in marginally.

After the race, L Ferraris stated that after having to be steadied in this incident, MR VALIANT lost momentum and then did not finish the race off over the latter stages.

Throughout the race, REVE PARISIEN and SUPER TEN travelled wide and without cover and then in the Straight REVE PARISIEN gave ground.

A veterinary inspection of REVE PARISIEN immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its left front leg.

The performance of REVE PARISIEN, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, REVE PARISIEN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

After the race, M Chadwick was not able to offer any reasonable explanation for the disappointing performance of SAKEWIN.

He said the horse travelled satisfactorily behind SUPER FORTUNE in the early and middle stages, but then did not finish the race off in the Straight.

A veterinary inspection of SAKEWIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

ORIENTAL SMOKE and SUPER FORTUNE were sent for sampling.
