Recap by phillip woo

Kurpany never looked back after rushing to the front approaching the 800m from a low draw for a sixth career win and first from five starts over the straight 1,000m. He's capable on his day and took full advantage of 10-pound claimer Ellis Wong. Whizz kid surged late to make it close after tracking the leader on the stands side. He's a 1,000m specialist. Punted late Carroll Street had his chance but came up one paced over the last 100m to finish close away in third following a prominent run on the far side from a low draw. It was another honest effort over his favourite straight 1,000m. We Are Hero made some ground from the rear to finish next best in the five-runner contest. He's likely on or near his mark after winning four times last season. Odds-on favourite Dream Winner found nothing when push came to shove travelling third near the far side after a tardy break. He was up in class after easily winning his first three starts last term and his rider Vincent Ho Chak-yiu was having his first ride after a serious injury.

Racing Incident Report

Race Three: (21) - CAUSEWAY BAY HANDICAP - Class 2 - 1000Meters

PING HAI GALAXY was withdrawn on 16.9.23 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore).

Before being allowed to race again, PING HAI GALAXY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

CARROLL STREET jumped awkwardly.

Near the 600 Metres, KURPANY lay out, briefly crowding WHIZZ KID.

When questioned regarding the performance of DREAM WINNER, C Y Ho stated that DREAM WINNER, which was stepping up to Class 2 today, jumped a little awkwardly, but was able to hold a forward position in the early stages.

He added from the 600 Metres when he placed DREAM WINNER under pressure, his mount did not fully respond to his riding and from that point finished the race off only fairly although not beaten too far by the winner.

He said, in his view, DREAM WINNER would derive benefit from today's performance, particularly as the horse is still relatively inexperienced.

Trainer F C Lor stated that DREAM WINNER had pleased the stable leading into the race and had trialed satisfactorily on 4 September 2023 when finishing 3rd behind GREENWICH.

He said since that run DREAM WINNER had worked well which included a track gallop when ridden by C Y Ho on 14 September 2023.

Mr Lor concurred the views offered by Jockey Ho that DREAM WINNER would derive benefit from today's performance.

A veterinary inspection of DREAM WINNER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

After considering the explanations, the Stewards determined that the performance of DREAM WINNER, favourite for the race and a last start winner, was unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, DREAM WINNER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

DREAM WINNER, KURPANY and WHIZZ KID were sent for sampling.
