Recap by phillip woo

Well-backed Samarkand eased into the box seat in the middle stages and reclaimed the lead 150m out en route to breaking through for his first Hong Kong win on his 11th local start. It was his second run for David Hayes after joining him from Pierre Ng Pang-chi during the break. Killer Instinct circled the field to hit the front 800m out and kept on gamely for second. It was his best effort from seven attempts at Happy Valley's 1,650m, but he was a dirt winner earlier this season. Sturdy Ruby ended third after chasing the slow pace. He is always a chance over this course and distance but has trouble winning. Last-start Class Five victor Kyrus Unicorn came from last to snatch fourth. It was a good effort in an event run to suit those gallopers near the speed. Pegasus General made a mid-race move and kept on all right to finish fifth. He should find his mark in this grade soon. Asian One ran on from worse than midfield but did not threaten the placegetters. He is better at Sha Tin. Favourite Durham Star found nothing after his prominent run. Sensationally backed Right Honourable did not get a race run at a suitable tempo.

Horse No 6 WIN WIN FIGHTER (E347) L Hewitson After the race, L Hewitson reported that his mount was not suited by the slow early pace and in hindsight he would have been better suited holding a more forward position due to the slow early pace.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 7 SAMARKAND (H070) K H Chan Near the 600 Metres was steadied when crowded by STURDY RUBY which was taken in by KILLER INSTINCT (C Y Ho) which shifted in when not clear.

Near the 400 Metres was held up behind KILLER INSTINCT.

When questioned regarding the slow pace set in the early stages, K H Chan stated that he was instructed to lead on his mount but not to ride along to do so as SAMARKAND has an inclination to race keenly.

He said after obtaining the lead, SAMARKAND settled well and although he was aware the pace of the event was slow, he was reluctant to make any use of his mount to set a faster pace so as to avoid SAMARKAND over-racing.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 8 FORTUNE PRESIDENT (G054) K Teetan From a wide barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
