Men’s premiership: Tigers beat Valley in Grand Championship rematch and Scottish score late

The Tigers beat Valley in a rematch of the Grand Championship final, which Valley won last season and Scottish needed a late penalty kick to beat Sandy Bay

In a rematch of last year’s Grand Championship, the Borelli Walsh USRC Tigers beat Societe Generale Valley 19-13 during Satuday’s men’s premiership rugby play. In a small sliver of revenge, the Tigers etched out a win led by four penalty kicks by Robbie Keith. Valley head coach Andrew Kelly said his squad basically handed the game to the Tigers.

“Our discipline was very, very poor and we gave away unnecessary penalties,” said Kelly after the game. “Credit to the Tigers, they took their chances, kicked their points and deserved the win.”

The Tigers were up 16-5 at half-time, also getting a try from Casey Stone. Thomas Lamboley and Toby Fenn scored for Valley in the loss. Kelly said his squad has one thing they’re going to key on during this week’s upcoming training session in preparation for a match against Natixis Hong Kong Football Club.

“Unfortunately our line out did not function today which was a huge factor in us losing.”

In the other early match, Bloomberg HK Scottish squeaked out a victory over Herbert Smith HKU Sandy Bay 20-16. It was another close loss for the new squad as they were up 16-10 at half-time, led by tries from Matt Lamming and three penalty kicks from Jack Metters. However Scottish got a try from Jamie Pincott in the second half to close the score to 16-15 for Sandy Bay, and then with less than 10 minutes Gregor McNeigh scored on a penalty kick to give Scottish the win 20-16.

In the final match of the day HKFC finally lost their first game of the season, as Kerry Hotel Kowloon beat them 23-17.
