Asia Rugby Sevens Series: Hong Kong show off scoring prowess in first day of action in Sri Lanka
The sevens squad spread out the scoring on the first day of action in Sri Lanka for the final leg of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series
The Hong Kong men’s sevens squad spread the love and demolished their opponents during the first day of action at the Asia Rugby Sevens Series final leg in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Saturday. In two games the team scored a combined 118 points.
The men destroyed Taiwan in their first group game 71-5 and when it came to tries, they got scores from seven different players. Raef Morrison, Liam Herbert, Jamie Hood, Tomasi Lawa, Lee Jones, Max Denmark and James Christie all scored for Hong Kong.
In their second match, Hong Kong beat China 47-7, getting tries from Kane Boucaut, Hood (2), Denmark (2), Morrison and Lawa
The men’s team only have to reach the semi-finals to clinch a second-placed finish in the series this year (they have lost to Japan in the two previous championships). They were without Ben Rimene, Salom Yiu Kam-shing, Michael Coverdale and Toby Fenn in Sri Lanka.
If they manage that, Hong Kong automatically book a spot in the international qualifier for the World Rugby Sevens Series at the Hong Kong Sevens next April, and also earn an invite as the 16th team to the Singapore Rugby Sevens the week afterwards. On Sunday, the men take on Sri Lanka for their final group match.
The Hong Kong women won their first group match against Sri Lanka 29-0, propelled by tries from Kwong Sau-yan (2), Stephanie Chan, Lindsay Varty, Natasha Olson-Thorne and Colleen Tjosvold. They lost their second group game against Japan, who beat them 31-7. Chong Ka-yan and Tjosvold scored in a losing cause. On Sunday, the women take on South Korea for their final group match.
