Benno Yung Tin-pang has been struggling in hospital for the past month but the 65-year-old trainer has confirmed he’s on the mend as he takes aim at Happy Valley’s Wednesday programme with unbeaten youngster Super Joy N Fun.

Absent from the racecourse in recent weeks, the veteran handler says he is on the road to recovery and looking forward to his speedster’s maiden Class Three test in the Shelley Handicap (1,200m) on Wednesday night.

“I’m good,” Yung said. “I’m still in hospital and I had pneumonia, but I’m getting a lot better now.

“Hopefully I’ll be out as soon as possible. I’m just making sure my immune system’s levels are back to normal.”

While Yung won’t be trackside on Wednesday, the trainer will be watching Super Joy N Fun intently after he reached 25 winners for the season thanks to Tourbillon Prince at Sha Tin on Sunday.

“It was great to have a winner,” Yung said. “I watched it on the TV. He won well and Hugh [Bowman] did a good job.

“I’m looking forward [to Super Joy N Fun]. I think he’s got a good chance.”

Super Joy N Fun will put his perfect record on the line and search for a hat-trick of wins over this course and distance when he steps up to Class Three level on Wednesday.

A narrow winner on debut at the beginning of February under Jerry Chau Chun-lok, Super Joy N Fun replicated his bold front-running performance to make all in another Class Four contest at the end of the month.

While he has won from gates nine and seven so far in his career, Super Joy N Fun will jump from barrier one under Zac Purton in the absence of the suspended Chau.

A victory for the son of What’s The Story will maintain his unbeaten record and also deliver the perfect tonic to Yung, who had his highest-rated galloper, Son Pak Fu, removed from his yard at the end of March.

“He’s quite a promising horse and luckily he got one draw one,” Yung said. “That’s very good for him stepping up into Class Three. It looks like he’ll keep improving, he’s got a good gate and Zac is on, so hopefully he goes well.”

Super Joy N Fun records consecutive wins at Happy Valley in February.

After raising his bat on Sunday to celebrate 100 wins for the eighth consecutive season, Purton will team up with Yung’s three-year-old for the first time in favour of again partnering the Danny Shum Chap-shing-trained Sports Legend, aboard whom he recorded a convincing victory last month.

“He’s had two starts, two wins and he’s done it in nice fashion,” Purton said of Super Joy N Fun. “He looks progressive and I was happy to pick up the ride.

“He’s a very relaxed and laid-back horse in the mornings. He just cruises along as if he’s having a casual day out. Those types of horses usually go a little bit higher in the ratings because they’re not overdoing it.

“He’s shown us that he’s got speed so he’ll use the gate, be in the right spot and get his chance again.”
