Harry Bentley is hopeful Mr Ascendency’s impeccable consistency will be rewarded with another victory in Saturday’s Class Two Hong Kong China Rugby Cup (1,600m) at Sha Tin.

The British jockey has teamed up with Ricky Yiu Poon-fai’s honest performer in all of his six starts this season, which include two wins and two thirds.

Mr Ascendency notched his second Class One triumph with a strong display over 1,650m at Happy Valley in February, before making it back-to-back wins in a tight finish to the Class Two Kent Handicap (1,650m) on the dirt at Sha Tin.

The former British galloper ran a solid third to Moments In Time at Happy Valley last start and returns to the Sha Tin turf, which he has won twice on previously.

In a competitive Class Two on Saturday, Bentley’s only concern is Mr Ascendency’s rating creeping up to a career-high 96, which gives him an impost of 131 pounds.

“He’s obviously run some extremely good races recently, having won twice and finishing third last time,” Bentley said.

“He might just be at a rating where the handicap might have just got a hold of him, but he’s still in a position where he can run a solid race. I certainly wouldn’t discount him being capable of winning. He’s in a rich vein of form and he’s been holding his form well.”

Mr Ascendency shares the same impost as Flaming Rabbit, a dominant Class Two winner at the track and distance of Saturday’s race two starts ago and last-start third behind C P Brave over 1,800m.

Mr Ascendency surges clear to win at Happy Valley.

Mr Ascendency concedes weight to the likes of Helene Feeling (130 pounds) and Chancheng Glory (119), who are both racing for the first time since running ninth and sixth respectively in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) in March.

The Best Peach (126) and Outgate, who carries 116 pounds after Angus Chung Yik-lai’s claim, are other prominent chances down in the weights.

In form after a Happy Valley double on Wednesday night, Bentley will also reunite with impressive debut winner Lo Pan Spirit in the Class Four Jordan Handicap (1,200m) at Sha Tin.

Defying his $38 quote at his first start, the Jimmy Ting Koon-ho-trained gelding stayed on strongly on the speed to narrowly beat Awesome Treasure in the Class Four Hong Kong Lions Cup (1,200m).

Bentley said Lo Pan Spirit had improved since the first-up victory.

“I genuinely think he’s taken a step forward,” Bentley said.

“He just feels a bit more on it, both mentally and physically. It was a really good first run. We went fairly steady in front, but he quickened really nicely and I like the way he stuck his head down and battled with Awesome Treasure. For a horse having his first run here, it was very promising, so there should be more to come.”

Lo Pan Spirit overcame a wide draw in barrier 10 on debut and has been set a task again from gate nine on Saturday.

Lo Pan Spirit (outside) fights strongly to beat Awesome Treasure on debut.

“I think the form he brings into the race is strong enough and with a barrier that’s not too dissimilar to what he won from last time,” Bentley said.

“We should be able to get up into a nice position.”

Sun Of Makfi, Robot Master, Soaring Bronco, Run Run Timing and Prawns Eleven are Bentley’s other rides at Sha Tin.
